Where DIY is reasonable
Replacing a like-for-like opener on a door that already balances properly. The rail assembles, the header bracket mounts, the trolley connects, and the limits get set.
It is fiddly overhead work, but it is not dangerous work.
Where it stops being reasonable
Stop and call if
- The door does not balance by hand — fix the springs first, always.
- Any spring, cable or bottom bracket work is involved.
- The header has no sound timber to fix the bracket to.
- You cannot set the force limits and confirm both auto-reverse tests pass.
The mistake we get called to is an opener fitted to a door with tired springs. The new motor is now doing the springs' job, and it will not last a year.

Setting the travel limits and force settings, then testing both safety reverses.
That is not optional finishing. That is the part that stops the door closing on somebody. If you are not confident doing it and verifying it, that alone is a reason to have it done.
