Everyone talks about springs. Fair enough — they are the part that fails dramatically.
But springs do not lift anything. They wind a shaft. The shaft turns two drums. The drums wind two cables. The cables lift the door.
Any link in that chain can fail, and each one fails differently.
The shaft
A steel tube running the width of the opening, carried on bearings at each end and often in the middle. Those bearings are a wear part, and a dry one announces itself with a rhythmic squeal.
The drums
Grooved cylinders at each end. The cable winds into the groove as the door rises. They are set to the door height and locked to the shaft with set screws.
When a set screw slips, one side lifts before the other — and you get the crooked door.
An uneven door is usually blamed on the track. More often it is a drum that has slipped a fraction of a turn.

The cables
Multi-strand steel, anchored at the bottom bracket. Under full tension whenever the door is closed, which is exactly why the bottom bracket is not a DIY part.
Signs the lifting system needs attention
- Rhythmic squealing that follows the door's travel — dry bearings.
- One side reaching the floor first — drum or cable.
- Rust dust below a drum — the cable is shedding strands.
- Cable visibly loose with the door closed — stop using it.

- Coil condition along the full length of both springs — gaps, surface rust, fatigue.
- The cycle rating originally fitted, so we can tell you honestly how much life you got.
- Cable condition at the drums, because cables and springs wear on the same clock.
- Drum set screws and shaft bearings, which is where an uneven door usually begins.
- The balance itself, by hand, opener disconnected. That is the proof the job is right.
If something on that list is worn but not urgent, we say so and give you a rough idea how long it has left. That way you can plan instead of react. Most people find this out the expensive way.
