An opener that has stopped responding is one of the few garage door faults where a homeowner can often find the cause in five minutes. Four things account for the overwhelming majority of the call-outs we attend, and two of them you can fix yourself.
Start here: does the wall button work?
This single test splits the problem in half. The wall button is hard-wired; the remote is radio.

1. Remote batteries and reprogramming
A remote that has become unreliable at range before dying completely is nearly always a battery. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the remote may have lost its pairing — a power cut can do this on some units. Reprogramming takes a minute with the LEARN button on the motor head.
2. The safety sensors
Two small units face each other near the floor on either side of the opening. They must see each other. If the beam is broken or the units are misaligned, the Garage Door Opener will refuse to close — usually closing a few inches and reversing, often with a clicking or flashing LED.
Nine times out of ten a door that will not close and beeps at you is a sensor knocked out of line by a bin, a bike, or a stray cobweb. It is the first thing we check and the first thing worth checking yourself.

Look for a solid light on both units. A blinking sensor LED means misalignment. Loosen the wing nut, line them up until both are solid, and retighten.
3. Power
Obvious, and skipped surprisingly often. Check the motor head is plugged in and the outlet is live — garage outlets are frequently on a GFCI that has tripped elsewhere in the circuit. If the opener has no lights at all, this is where the fault is.
4. The logic board
If the wall button does nothing, power is confirmed and the sensors are aligned, the control board has usually failed. Florida garages are hard on electronics — heat and humidity are exactly what capacitors dislike, and boards commonly fail after storm-season power surges.
When it is not the opener at all
- The motor runs but the door does not move: the trolley has disengaged, or a spring has broken.
- The door reverses immediately on closing: sensors, or the down-force setting.
- The door opens part way and stops: usually binding in the tracks, or a failing spring.
- Grinding from the motor head: the drive gear, a common and repairable wear part.
If the Garage Door Opener is over fifteen years old and the board has gone, replacement usually beats repair — and it brings rolling-code security and a battery backup, which is worth having in a state that loses power as often as this one does.
What the opener is actually for
An opener is a guide, not a lift.
Worth saying plainly. On a properly balanced door the motor is shifting maybe ten pounds of effective weight. That is how a small motor moves a heavy door for twenty years without complaint.
Ask it to lift the whole door and the arithmetic changes completely. Nobody enjoys hearing it, but it saves money.
Repair or replace the unit?
Drive gears, sprockets, remotes, sensors, even control boards are all replaceable parts.
It sounds obvious. It is not. If the unit is under about ten years old and the fault is one of those, repairing it usually wins comfortably.
Past about fifteen years, or if the board has failed, replacement generally makes more sense. You also pick up rolling-code security, a soft start and stop that is kinder to the whole door, and battery backup.
In a state that loses power as often as this one, that last one is worth more than it sounds. You will notice it long before it becomes urgent, if you know to look.
What we check on an opener call
Every visit runs the same way, whatever the original complaint was. It is quicker than it sounds, and it stops us treating a symptom and calling it a fix.
- Whether the door balances by hand first — before we touch the motor at all.
- Travel limits and force settings, in both directions.
- Both safety systems: the photo-eyes and the mechanical reverse.
- Drive condition — chain tension, belt wear, or the screw and its lubrication.
- The logic board and capacitor, especially on units that have been through a storm season.
If something on that list is worn but not urgent, we say so and give you a rough idea how long it has left. That way you can plan instead of react. Most people find this out the expensive way.
The mistake we see most

Let us be honest about this bit. The new motor simply inherits the impossible job that killed the old one.

The short version
If you take one thing away from all of that: a door that is balanced, lubricated and has working safety reverses will outlast one that is not. By years, not months.
Almost everything we get called out to was preventable. Most of it was cheap to prevent, too.
