What actually helps
Slowing corrosion down
- Rinse the exterior of the door with fresh water occasionally — it removes deposited salt.
- Lubricate every three months rather than every six; the film is what keeps salt off the steel.
- Specify galvanised or coated springs and hardware when replacing.
- Keep the bottom seal in good order so water is not sitting against the bottom section.
- Fix paint chips early — a breach in the finish is where rust starts on a steel door.
When to upgrade the hardware

- Check the bottom seal, because a failed seal lets water in with no wind at all.
- Test the balance and both safety reverses.
- Look for rust at the bottom section, especially within a few miles of salt water.
- Confirm the Garage Door Opener has a working battery backup.
